Many people ask me how Cadence has more than quadrupled its market cap over the last seven years. Yes, we have improved our business model, our technology and the high tech environment improved. But, I believe that the key to our success has been the dramatic shift in our culture. The bedrock of our culture is One Cadence – One Team spirit. When we talk about sustaining our culture at Cadence, we ask ourselves, “Are we creating a global culture that celebrates difference and debate? One that is not just diverse but, more importantly, inclusive ?” There has been a great deal of recent research linking a diverse workforce to increased innovation, productivity, and business success. Having a dynamic team that is open to diverse ideas is essential to Cadence’s ability to innovate in all areas of the business. We are committed to strengthening the diversity of our team and ensuring a respectful and inclusive environment for everyone. At the core of One Cadence – One Team are the secrets to an inclusive culture: transparency, trust and collaboration. 1. Transparency We empower individuals to speak up, and instill confidence that their voices will be heard. Healthy debate and open communication within teams is encouraged in order to make effective and informed decisions. We use a Debate, Decide, and Communicate framework to help keep this dialogue open while ensuring that we also arrive at a timely decision. Our executive team models this culture of transparency and open dialogue by regularly hosting informal roundtable discussions and Q&A sessions that reach over 1000 employees every year. 2. Trust We believe in creating a great place to do great work, which means giving individuals the trust and autonomy to innovate and encouraging them to follow their passions. Our CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, encourages a culture of risk-taking at all levels. He implores all employees to “think out of the box, be creative, and be disruptive.” With trust at our core, employees have the support to take risks and innovate. 3. Collaboration Our work requires a high level of collaboration, enabled through a culture of transparency and trust. While our motto is One Cadence - One Team, that doesn’t mean we shy away from differences; it means we support each other. Among our programs for supporting our diverse team, I am particularly proud of the Cadence Women’s Forum , which provides an open community for employees to discuss topics of interest, share articles and videos, and come together for guest speakers and other events. Cadence partners with organizations and universities around the world to find and attract the best individuals and diverse talent to join our team . Our recognition as World’s Best Multinational Workplace and as a Best Workplace for Diversity is a testament to the strength of our culture around the globe and our commitment to building a dynamic, welcoming, and inclusive environment. Cadence engineers contribute their thoughts on innovation: To innovate as a team you need to do two things—think outside the box and think collectively!—Abdelhakim Diverse team experience brings different ideas, innovations, and solutions, and this brings the best ideas forward. We have a lot of expertise across the team and created a culture of debating ideas among R&D, product engineering—and then making a collective decision.—Pawan It’s important to provide a unique value to the team. As a product engineer my role is to be a problem expert, to really know the problem. As a team, we use the Debate, Decide and Communicate process to innovate by providing ether a complete fix to a simulation issue, or offering a quick work-around if time pressure is high.—Yuchun We challenge each other, trust in each other’s abilities and then create space for innovation. This brings out the best in everybody and elevates the team.—Sanjeeb Every engineer should question assumptions, be open to all feedback and questioning, and work to build an open, competitive and healthy environment that nurtures the innovation of high-quality products. A team needs to experiment and take some calculated risks in order to innovate.—Somasunder Innovation doesn’t happen because a team says, “Today we’re going to innovate!” It happens when the team picks a hard problem and goes at it with a “do whatever it takes” mentality. Everyone chips in and, without realizing it, you have an innovation on your hands.—Aravind With good teamwork, ideas and work are easily discussed, minds are kept open, and we inspire each other. This leads to a better final product in a shorter time.—Keumog
