From February 27th to March 2nd it is Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain. CES in Las Vegas is the conference for consumer electronics, and although there are mobile phones around, the big conference for mobile is MWC. This is where new handsets are announced and where the infrastructure vendors (base-stations, etc.) have enormous booths that fill half of an entire hall and you need an appointment to get to see the good stuff. Cadence will be exhibiting. The focus is the Tensilica product line, which is used heavily in audio, video and wireless modems in the industry. Probably the star of the show will be the Microsoft Hololens, which contains 24 Tensilica processors. We will have a Hololens in the booth for people to try out for real to get a better idea of what its capabilities are. If you saw the "What's for Breakfast?" video from last week, then you saw me using one. Or here's a video we made for the Consumer Electronics Show that gives you an idea of what you see when you use it. (Please visit the site to view this video) The Hololens is unlike anything that I've used before. I've seen virtual reality (where you can't see any of your surroundings) and augmented reality (where data is superimposed on what you are looking at). The Hololens is more immersive, but you are seeing the room you are in, your hands, and so on. When you play a game, you first look around the room so that it maps out where the walls are. The creatures you are fighting may crawl around the walls, emerging through sofas and doorways, while other creatures may burst through them. The device senses where your eyes are looking, and you tap your finger to do things. So to kill one of the scorpions on the wall, you look at it and tap your finger. If it shoots at you first, you can duck to avoid the fireball. A game and an adrenaline rush in one! At this point, the Hololens is a developer version. It is available to anyone, but it costs $3000—so not exactly a consumer price point yet. I talked in yesterday's post, Cat-NB1 and HaLow IP Powered by Tensilica Fusion F1 about IP vendors CommSolid and Methods2Business, who have built wireless IP using the Tensilica Fusion F1 DSP. Reference implementations of both of these systems will be in the booth too.
