Historical Background The idea of BarCamp was established the first time by the Internet pioneer Tim O’Reilly in 2003 at his farm in San Francisco Bay. The invited people were developers, journalists, programmers, start-up-entrepreneur and thinkers of the internet scene, in order to discuss and widely exchange the ideas about the future of internet, related information and communications technology. It was a good opportunity for every attendee to present his idea, vision or project and start to discuss with the others how to develop and improve this idea. Everyone had the chance to choose what he/she was interesting in and attend the session. The event went for two and half days, everyone had a great time by eating, drinking and discussing together about their interests, projects and ideas. In 2005 this idea was emancipated to be a worldwide event which everyone can use to improve the field that he/she was working on. In 2006 there was the first BarCamp in Germany, since then the world started to hear and give interest in this event, of course the events didn’t followed the same way or the same rules like the O’Reilly’s one, but the idea remain the same. BarCamp was an idea that was created from the heart of the society to improve many fields and to connect the different visions at one table in an open atmosphere. Cadence Academic Network BarCamp Cadence Academic Network has used the concept of “BarCamp” in order to be more interactive and connected with the Lead Institutions that participate in the Academic Network. BarCamp is a flexible and open ideas meeting. Through the Lead Institutions professors Cadence Academic Network has a wide range collaboration with the universities, also through them we could be more able to understand and establish the new fresh ideas. At CDNLive 2017 Cadence Academic Network has used the BarCamp concept for the first time, the results for this meeting were very impressive due to the big variety of visions and ideas. The interaction by the Lead Institutions was great and noticeable, innovative ideas were presented and also a good feedback was given. Functionality of the BarCamp: Rules for BarCamp: Speak about BarCamp Blog about BarCamp When you want to present, write your idea and a short sentence about it on the card, that has been given to you Present yourself and your idea to the others When there is a similar idea, they will be counted as one There will be no prepared presentation for the idea, the presentation format is flexible There should be no spectators (only participants) Interactive – Innovative – Flexible, this is what makes it a BarCamp. The BarCamp concept is based on five phases: Idea Phase: this is considered as the first phase. In this phase the Lead Institutions professors writes their ideas or visions on a blank card and then every one of them has to say a short hint about his idea, then these cards have to be collected by the staff team. Election Phase: in this phase the ideas have to be pinned on a white board and then the professors receive a voting paper in order for them to vote for the idea that they think it’s interesting for them (they are allowed to vote for 3 different ideas). Nomination Phase: in this phase the staff team have to collect the votes and announce the nominated ideas to be presented in the last phase. Discussing phase: In this phase the nominated ideas have to be presented during a session. These sessions for the nominated ideas will run in parallel, every session has 30 min time to be discussed and the attendees can change sessions while the sessions are running. Every session will have a specific color for it, so the attendee will have the colors for the sessions that he/she was attending. These colors will be used after finishing the sessions to vote whether the session was interesting or relevant. Voting phase: in this phase the attenders will vote for the sessions on a whiteboard, the winning ideas will be discussed between the Lead Institutions professors. edaBarCamp Reutlingen At the 5-6th of July I have attended the edaBarCamp in Reutlingen. It was the second interesting event that I have attended this year. Great issues waiting to be solved, have been presented during the event time. Many good topics were brought into the sessions regarding MEMS design, analog design, robotics, etc. We started the event with a pin session which we have defined the time and the rooms for the sessions. It was followed by the next phase, which was the topic phase where everyone has given a card to write the topic that he wants to present to the others. After voting for the interesting topics, all the topics where assigned to specific time (1 hour) and also to a specific room. Of course I couldn’t attend all the sessions that I was interested in due to time conflicts, but it was well organized. event was another prove that BarCamp event has born from the core of the society to handle many problems. I could also see the great will from universities and also research institutes to connect with each other in order to make the strong impact in the industrial world. By attending Barcamp you experience how research institutes and universities are working, what is the future of technology and how we can improve it, you get suggestions and solutions from all kind of experts, regular students and professors who bring this variety of ideas into this event. For me as an intern at Cadence Academic Network, Cadence Academic Network BarCamp and edaBarCamp was the first kind of such event that I have ever attended. Many questions were running in my mind how, where, who… etc. During the BarCamp meeting, it took me really short time to understand how this kind of events are executed. Why? Simply was, the event was hitting the weak points and strengthen the relationship between the universities and the industrial companies by presenting new visions and ideas. An un-conference event with no restrictions, so easy to understand and also extremely effective. My attendance at the BarCamp at CDNLive 2017 and edaBarCamp in Reutlingen was also a great chance for me as a fresh intern to understand how events are being held and also how to make an impact in the industrial world through this kind of events.
