Not many people like to wear the same color every day, so why should Virtuoso? After all, the color we choose or wear is known to have a huge impact on how we feel and behave. So, isn't it reasonable to expect that the software that you use or work in all day reflects the color that is in line with your mood, choice for the day? No, I won't get any deeper into talking about Color Psychology, but if that's a topic that interests you, here's a research paper, A Theory of Colour Psychology and Colour Harmony , by Angela Wright, a noted Color scientist. OK, coming back to Virtuoso. You may have a complicated requirement like color preference (and its impact on your mood and behavior) driving you to choose the color of your Virtuoso session, or your requirement might be much simpler—you are working on a design using multipatterning technology that may be easier to view if the background color of Virtuoso was different. Whatever may be your reason behind wanting to dress Virtuoso in a different color, Virtuoso is always in the game with you and enables you to choose a background color from the supported color palette. Assuming you are using IC6.1.7 ISR7, ICADV12.2 ISR7, ICADV12.3, or a later release, you can quickly choose a background color for your Virtuoso editors—both schematic and layout—by choosing CIW – Options – User Preferences – Default Editor Background Color . Or, you could set the environment variable, defaultEditorBackgroundColor , to a color value of your choice, such as "green" using: envSetVal("ui" "defaultEditorBackgroundColor" 'string "green") If you used the color palette to choose a custom color, you can derive the code of the selected color by fetching the value currently set for the defaultEditorBackgroundColor environment variable. Well, if you are not using the versions I listed above, and are still using one of our older supported versions for some reason—IC6.1.7 ISR6, ICADV12.2 ISR6, IC6.1.6, or an earlier release—you might need to follow a slightly different set of steps to change the background color of your Virtuoso editors. And these steps are detailed in our Troubleshooting Instruction note available on the Cadence Support portal. Now that you know Virtuoso can look different like you each day, go ahead and try out our simple, yet very useful functionality to dress Virtuoso in the color of your choice.
