Recently, Cadence India announced the 13th edition of the Cadence Design Contest. Through this contest, Cadence provides a platform for students to showcase their design talent and serve as a stepping-stone to achieving greater things in their career. I have been closely involved in this contest for the past seven years and here are a few reasons why I feel every electronics engineering student in India should participate in this contest. 1. Opportunity to showcase innovation and design talent Many students don’t get the opportunity to express their design talents in the Industry. By participating in this contest, students get a chance to showcase their design talent and apply their skills. Obviously, not everyone who enters this competition wins. However, students can still benefit from the opportunity to challenge themselves and experience the learning curve and develop a new skill. 2. Future job prospects Cadence has a unique paid internship program where students gets hired and trained with the latest tools and technologies. Cadence gives preference for paid internship program to the finalists of this competition. Even if you don’t win the competition, as a finalist you will get a chance to get selected for an internship program in the company. 3. Recognition from industry and academia Cadence Design Contest is a well-known competition in semiconductor industry and engineering colleges in India. Winning this competitions is a great way to stand out from the crowd. It gives you instant recognition from industry and academia. 4. Build a good resume Winning this competition adds more value to your resume as semiconductor companies know that participating in this competition is a great achievement for a student (thanks to its rigorous paper evaluation process) and therefor value it a lot more, when they look for candidates for recruitment. 5. Showcase your work at Industry’s premier user conference Winners of both undergraduate and postgraduate category get an opportunity to showcase their work at industry’s premier user conference CDNLive and get a chance to interact with industry’s brightest minds. 6. Get a chance to win the Best Presentation Award Submissions are judged by an expert committee, comprised of representatives from the industry and Cadence experts, on pre-defined criteria. In the final round these experts confer and select one paper in each category that stands out as the Best Paper; criteria including inventiveness, complexity, feasibility, breadth of design, effective tool usage, and presentation. 7. Something for everyone Best paper prizes are awarded to the winning and runner-up teams in two categories: Undergraduate category and the Graduate category. Both the students and the guides (professors who guide the students through the process) are given exciting prizes. Members of all finalists get certificates.
