Last week it was the Annual San Jose Intern Showcase, in which the San Jose based interns all set up posters across the back of the building 10 cafeteria for a couple of hours. How Many Interns Are There? I go to this event, talk to some interns, and take some photos. But then I always like to talk to the Cadence Academic Network. This goes under the name CHIPs, College Hires and Internship Programs. This is not to be confused with DARPA's CHIPS program, which Cadence participates in. This is the Common Heterogeneous Integration and IP Reuse Strategies, and I plan to write more about this in a week or two. Anyway, back to CHIPs. Oh, and if you want to see what I said about it last year, see my post CHIP: College Hire and Internship Program . As of the end of July, a week ago, there were 259 interns working for Cadence. You might think that a lot of them would be in engineering, and you'd be right. However, we have interns in all sorts of areas working on things like culture and engagement, improving our onboarding process for new employees, financial analytics and more. There is more to being an intern than just interning. The San Jose intern program has hosted Intern Mentor Roundtables, Career Day, Intern Offsite, an Intern/Manager social, the aforementioned Intern Showcase, and there is an upcoming Volunteer event. We actually have 13 intern programs around the world, at all our major offices, and most engineering sites. I confess I didn't even know we had an office in Poland, but we seem to have three, in Warsaw, Katowice, and Bielsko-Biala. Here's the complete list: San Jose Austin Chelmsford, MA Beijing Shanghai Nanjing Taiwan Germany Cambridge, UK Poland Haifa, Israel India Brazil Intern Showcase As I already said, the Intern Showcase was held for a couple of hours over lunch in the Cadence building 10 cafeteria. Obviously, all the interns were there to talk about their work over the summer. When I first went to an intern showcase, the two things that immediately hit me were that there were a lot more interns than I expected in San Jose alone, and that they were not all working on R&D projects in engineering. Want proof? There are interns in HR and finance working on business processes and more. But there are, of course, in a company like Cadence, lots of projects that are in R&D. Since it is the hottest thing around, a lot of them are in deep learning. Just a couple are in the picture above. I don't know everyone in Cadence, so I'm not sure who everyone is, but several senior executives were in attendance. Here is Tom Beckley talking to the tastily named Connor McClellan (wrong spelling though). Tom must live on planes. I met him at CDNLive Japan (where he gave one of the keynotes, see my post CDNLive Japan: The Fourth Industrial Revolution and the Third Dimension for details). Then he flew back to his home in Pittsburgh, and I came back to California. But the following Monday at the DARPA ERI kickoff meeting, he was back in San Francisco. I will be covering that meeting in depth in a week or two. I'm guessing he went home to Pittsburgh, but a week later here he is at the Intern Showcase. Chinese Blog Posts One intern I talked to in a bit more detail was Meilin Zhang. She is working in marketing and improving our reach into China, at least for the signal integrity team. As you may or may not know, most US social media (YouTube, Google, Facebook, Twitter...) is blocked in China by the Great Firewall. In China, almost all of these functions are subsumed by WeChat, which Americans usually think of as WhatsApp for Chinese (which is one of the things it does) but it is so much more. One part of what she is doing is translating some blog posts into Chinese. These will appear on cadence.com in a special Chinese language blog, but plans are afoot to also have them appear on our Chinese site, which currently doesn't have any blog area at all. Becoming an Intern If you are interested in becoming an intern at Cadence or being hired into an entry-level job, we have a special page for you. Cadence has a lot of job openings at any given time, so it is frustrating for a new graduate to wade through lists of jobs that require several years experience in circuit extraction, working in finance, or whatever. This is the general Careers page, but here is the special page for Interns and College Grads . Sign up for Sunday Brunch, the weekly Breakfast Bytes email.Image may be NSFW.
