Taiwan is one of the most important hubs for the global semiconductor industry. Served as an annual important event for Cadence in Taiwan, with the efforts to provide tailored lineups for local industry, this year’s CDNLive Taiwan has successfully attracted a record-breaking participation with over 1,000 visitors including speakers, exhibitors, and attendees from over 180 companies, which not only demonstrates the attention that the local design community paid to the event but also its close connection with Cadence Taiwan. According to Taiwan's Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center (IEK), the production value of the local semiconductor industry totaled NT$2.46 billion in 2017, making it the third largest in the world, after the United States and South Korea. Also, SEMI forecasts that the production value of Taiwan's semiconductor industry will hit about NT$3 trillion in 2021. In addition to being home to the world's largest foundry business, Taiwan also leads in the packaging and testing service and is the second largest market for IC design service. Although local IC designers are faced with the slowdown of PC market and the increasing competition in the smartphone chip market, Taiwanese companies have made inroads into the emerging IoT markets such as automotive electronics and industrial applications to balance the impact and boost output. According to local industry characteristics and the latest technology trends, this event particularly invited three important partners, including UMC, ASE, and Amazon Web Services, to deliver speeches on the topics about IC design for IoT, 3D packaging, and cloud-enabled EDA tools. And the first keynote, “Enabling the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) Cadence System Design Enablement”, was made by Tom Beckley, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Custom IC & PCB Group (CPG). Steven Liu, Senior Vice President of UMC talked about “IC2.0: Next-Generation IC for an Intelligently Connected World”. The Intelligently Connected era, which will be called IC 2.0, will open a new realm of possibilities with regards to new chips in AI, IoT, 5G, and automotive being introduced into our everyday lives. Steve shared how UMC played the role to help design houses take early advantage of these high growth opportunities. Next, Dr. CP Hung, Vice President of ASE Group, talked about New SiP Technology and Design Challenges and collaboration with Cadence on SiP-id EDA solution. He shared the innovations in SiP technologies – Flip-Chip, Fan-Out and beyond, describing how these promises are fulfilled in achieving higher bandwidth, small form factor, with increased functionality and mixed wafer nodes, so very important in the IoT, big data and mobile applications. Last keynote was with David Pellerin from Amazon Web Services, who shared “Innovation in Cloud-Based EDA for IoT, AI, and Semiconductor Design” and how AWS customers increasingly rely on cloud-based Electronic Design Automation to innovate faster, and at cloud scales. In the afternoon there were six technical tracks with 40 sessions to share the best practices on critical design, and discover new techniques for realizing advanced silicon, SoCs, and systems. Those tracks featured Cadence and partner speakers with topics on digital full flow, analog, PCB, verification, IP sessions with Tensilica Ecosystem, as well as user papers. One of the highlights is that MediaTek filled up four sessions in the Digital Flow track, talking about their experiences of using Cadence’s digital full flow. The topics include “Early Stage physical aware accurate evaluation to DVFS design(Genus) “, “Tackling the Challenges of High Performance Clock Structure Design”, “Incremental IR Drop Analysis on Large Scale Design for Fast ECO Iterations”, and “IR Timing Co-signoff". CDNLive Taiwan marked the Cadence 30th Anniversary being celebrated this year. Cadence Taiwan office has been established in Hsinchu Science Park for over three decades, witnessing and contributing to growth of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry.
