Every DAC, Heart of Technology (HOT) organizes an event. This year it will be held on Monday, June 6, from 7:30pm to 11:30pm at the Speakeasy (412 Congress Avenue). This year's event will be benefiting CASA of Travis County. Sponsors will have access to a VIP lounge with vintage bowling lanes, shuffle board, and a full bar. Everyone will be treated to a live performance by Killer Tofu, a '90s cover band from Boston, covering the Spice Girls, TLC, Green Day, and pretty much any band from the '90s. Jim will be debuting his signature cocktail, the HoJo! Guests will also be welcome to beer, wine, and passed appetizers. Last year I talked to Jim Hogan about how Heart of Technology (HOT) got started. He said it started in 2007, at the depths of the recession, when a lot of people were struggling. Jim had previously given money to San Jose State (his alma mater), but decided that maybe prioritizing getting people food was more important. He also realized that a lot of good causes, such as the food banks, were just not well equipped to put on significantly sized events. But the EDA and IP industries do it all the time. Jim knew lots of marketing people in the EDA and IP industries who knew the ropes, plus he knew lots of musicians, including himself, to provide the entertainment. In that sense, HOT is a sort of "charity accelerator". As Jim puts it: At the heart of technology are people with passion for innovation and change. HOT harnesses that power to go beyond code and silicon and fund programs to help raise awareness of charitable causes that add to the betterment of life in local communities. So the first event was held at South First Billiards in San Jose to raise money for Second Harvest Food Bank. I won't run through all the events that they have run. Last year they ran the Love IP party at Jillian's during DAC. Over $100,000 has been raised for charity by these events. HoT is not just a one-man operation. Now many other people are involved to organize and publicize the events, and a whole group of EDA and IP companies sponsor the events. This year's sponsors run from ARM to True Circuits via DAC itself, ESDA (the new EDAC), OneSpring, Perception Software, Semifore, Semiwiki, Teklatech, and, of course, TeamHogan. This year the party will be benefiting CASA of Travis County. CASA speaks up for children who’ve been abused or neglected by empowering the community to volunteer as advocates for them in the court system. More details on the HOT party page .
